Our Mission
We love Sisters Oregon, our greater area community, we love our state, and we can't wait to Celebrate Oregon with you. We are located in downtown Sisters, Oregon, featuring artwork by many talented area artists.
Makin' It Local is powered by High Desert Frameworks and the Love Of Local. We have enjoyed the art and custom picture framing business for over 30 years, nearly 25 years in Central Oregon. On one of our first family hikes in Central Oregon, we have the pleasure of an unbelievable meadow of wildflowers and lupine in the upper meadow near Three Finger Jack, along with very persistent swarms of mosquitos!
We were hooked on wildflowers, not so much on bugs. We went home and planted our first wildflower garden, which has been a blast every year. At first, we didn't realize how important our plantings contributed to the pollinators, bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
When we opened Makin' it Local in 2023, we started carrying Central Oregon raw honey from The Royal Bee. Immediately thereafter, we started making and giving wildflower seed packets to our art patrons. The response was over the top. In March 2024, we handed out over 150 seed packets during the March 2024 Fourth Friday Art Walk. We plan to keep the tradition alive and encourage our guests and art patrons to keep growing wildflower patches—no matter how small or large.
You can follow the Makin' it Local Event Calendar to ensure you don't miss our next giveaway or an incredible local artist show.

Wildflower Seed Mix
Our Native Pollinator Mix and Cascade Kaleidoscope Mix has over 30 different species of annual and perennial flowers. Cascade Kaleidoscope Mix offers a wide range of different colors and shapes that will blend excellently with any garden. This mix is designed to have a longer bloom time, a broader adaptation to different soil compositions and climates, and more color. Since Cascade Kaleidoscope Mix is composed of a wide diversity of species, it works well as a test plot to help individuals decide on which flowers, they prefer to replant the following year. If you are not sure what you want to purchase but want a lot of variety and color this is a great mix to choose. Our pollinator mix contains flowers and grasses that are beneficial to our native pollinator species. These are a collection of pollinators that are native to the United States. During their growing season these species provide food such as pollen and nectar to help our pollinator populations. Planting an area of assorted wildflowers, rather than a single species in your yard, helps our pollinators by having a larger variety to choose from that is more colorful and easier to find. This mix contains various native flower species as well as a native grasses native to the United States & Oregon. Several of them are perennials that may come back year after year. Most perennials will not bloom the first year they are planted. They establish a plant the first and then bloom the second. You may not see all of these flowers bloom the same year.

A bit about defensible space.
In the context of wildfire safety and defensible space, wildflowers can be a good choice for landscaping, but it's crucial to manage them to prevent them from becoming a fire hazard. This means spacing them out, mowing them regularly, and ensuring they don't form tall, dense areas of fuel. Why Wildflowers in Defensible Space?
Aesthetic Appeal: Wildflowers can add beauty and natural charm to a landscape. Habitat: They can support local wildlife and pollinators. Fire-Resistant Potential: When managed properly, they can be a part of a fire-resistant landscape.
How to Manage Wildflowers for Fire Safety:
Spacing: Plant wildflowers in widely separated beds within the defensible space to avoid creating a continuous fuel bed. Height: Keep wildflowers short by mowing them regularly, especially after they have dried out or "cured". Mowing: Remove dried or "cured" wildflowers from the defensible space area to eliminate potential wildfire fuel. Plant Selection: Choose native or drought-tolerant wildflowers less likely to dry out and become a fire hazard. Consider Other Plants: While wildflowers can be a good choice, also consider using other low-growing, fire-resistant plants like grasses and groundcovers within the defensible space. Consult with Experts: For specific advice on fire-resistant landscaping in your area, consult with local fire departments, forestry services, or landscape professionals.
